“80 Ferrari cars equal the price of this piece of wood, a very rare piece that weights 16 kilograms.
20 million dollars = 80 Ferrari cars!
If you owned it, you’d burn it. Don’t be amazed! This piece is one of the highest quality ouds called kinam.
There are many kinds of oud. It prices have risen rapidly due to the high demand on it in the past ten years.
The regions of the world that consume the most oud are: the Arab Gulf countries, China, and perfume-producing European countries.
The trees that produce out grow in southeast Asia.”

Al Jazeera has also produced a documentary titled “The Smoke of Gold” which examines oud as a social icon in the Arabian Gulf states, a symbol of hospitality and warmth, the smell of which is purported to chase away the blues. The documentary is filled with details and valuable information about this beguiling material and its methods of extraction and production. It charts its journey from India and Southeast Asia (Thailand and Malaysia), the only areas where the trees it’s extracted from grow, to France and Britain. The full documentary is available to watch online (in Arabic, without subtitles) on Al Jazeera Arabic YouTube channel: http://ajar.io/am5j

“Other artists have worked with olfaction art, like New York artist Martyna Wawrzyniak, who last year placed an ad in an issue of Harper’s Bazaar of her own sweat disguised as a perfume ad. Brian Goeltzenleuchter crowdsourced the smells of 10 neighborhoods in Los Angeles for a “scent-scape” map shown last year at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Meanwhile, Peter de Cupere is an artist who created a project called “NY Smells Like,” gathering smells from residents. He also co-created the first smell-recognition iPad app, Olfacio, and invented the first scent piano, the Olfactiano, which plays “scent sonatas.””

“While 139 artisanal perfumes were created in 2004, the number rose to 441 in 2014, according to Michael Edwards, author of Fragrances of the World, the largest guide to perfume classification. And while it’s hard to get comprehensive sales figures, market research group NPD suggests that the £150-plus segment of the couture market, which includes artisanal perfumes, upped its market share by 35% for the year ending December 2014.”

Artist ‘Scent Engineers’ Plants To Smell Like Dead Bodies, Sperm And Air Pollution

“When one bends over to smell a flower, one usually expects to experience a pretty limited variety of odors, ranging from sweet perfumes to the aroma of pine or wood, maybe a loamy or minty bouquet. Then there are the rarer, more foul scents associated with flora – the ones that conjure images of dead animals, inescapable smoke or putrid trash heaps. These are the smells that interest Peter de Cupere…”
